What our Rating tells you

AAAAA
THE LEADERS

Only five colleges out of the 3519 colleges we surveyed could achieve this rating. And undoubtedly all of them are established IITs - Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur and Madras. Each one of them has publications above 1500 articles every year and their average citation figures are between 2.4-5.5. Interestingly none of the IITs are either accredited or participants in the TEQIP programme, but all of them are good at extramural research with IIT Bombay and IIT Madras showing substantial reach and diversity. IIT Kharagpur tops in terms of academic productivity while IIT Bombay scores on H-Index. In other words, IITB is high on impact and effectiveness. In terms of IP, it is IIT Madras that lags behind every other top player, though industrial interface is the best here. Overall these five players set the benchmark.

THE CHALLENGERS

The next best rating is gained by just 28 engineering colleges (0.81%) in the country. It is one college more than last year. Last year this cluster was evenly poised between public and private players and maximum number of colleges in this category is shared between Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. But this year Karnataka too has come into the picture with quite a few colleges. Most of the colleges in this category have a sizable and diverse extramural funding and their visible research output in terms of sponsored labs and publications is what makes them commendable. Academic productivity is uniform in this sector and is relatively low for private sector players like Manipal and VIT, with VIT being slightly better. In fact, if majority of the faculty members in the private sector institutions begin to publish, their output and standing would take quantum jump. What distinguishes colleges in this cluster is that it is dominated by IITs, Tier-1 NITs, and a few IIITs.

THE STRIVERS

Any technical education expert who seeks to improve the quality of engineering colleges must focus on these 58 colleges. These are colleges with true potential for excellence. The colleges in this sector admit students who are in the 99 pecentile category, but their propensity to research and publish is still in the nascent stage. Amongst the 372 institutions that are part of TEQIP I and TEQIP II, this segment has the largest number of awardees and most of them have funds coming in for institution development. Industrial research is what these institutions need to focus on.

AAA+

Soldier Ants

The 100+ colleges in this cluster are what one would call good teaching institutions. They have reasonably good faculty members and some of them publish occasionally. Of the four parameters considered, they would notch up scores in at least two or three, but student preferences remain their biggest accomplishment. The cluster is dominated by high-quality affiliated colleges, which are fine teaching institutions and are making successful foray into research activities as well. This cluster also has a number of young deemed universities which were fine teaching institutions previously.

AAA

Miles to go before I sleep
These 256 institutions form the base of the good institutions’ pyramid in the country. They excel in just one of the four parameters. Most have performed very well with respect to student preferences. In terms of cut- offs they are amongst the top 80-85 percentile with some inching closer to the 90 mark. Some young private and deemed universities in this cluster have much better research output and industry interface. But their high fee regime seems unattractive to top quality students. Not more 9% of this cluster is accredited, but most of them are good to go for a reasonable education.
